Have You Undergone Tooth Implant Surgery? Here Are 4 Things To Avoid

Dentist Blog

Technology has affected the periodontist industry significantly. For instance, patients with missing, damaged, cracked, or infected teeth can now get teeth implants. These implants are convenient since they are designed to mimic your natural teeth. But to get them, you will have to undergo a surgical procedure.

After the surgery, you will need time to heal while avoiding some things to ensure complete healing. Here is a look at four things to avoid after dental implants.

1. Cigarette Smoking

Even without undergoing the surgical procedure, smoking is harmful, and it compromises your health. For example, it encourages the formation of plaque that provides favorable conditions for bacterial growth. Smoking is also associated with teeth discoloration and high nicotine levels. It also increases the chances of getting gum infections that interrupt the healing process. Although avoiding smoking until the gums heal may be a challenge for a smoker, it is necessary and helpful.

2. Electric Toothbrush

An electric toothbrush is suitable for brushing your natural teeth. These brushes have rotating bristles that can reach further than the conventional toothbrush. But generally, reaching deep into your teeth and gums when brushing is not as important as healing. Therefore, your teeth implant dentists might recommend that you avoid electric toothbrushes after surgery.

If you have to brush your teeth, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and apply minimum pressure. It is easier to reduce the pressure and speed of the conventional toothbrush than an electric one. Then, after your teeth heal, you can start using the electric one again.

3. Straw Drinking

Drinking using a straw ensures beverages have little contact with the teeth. That is a safe option if you consume drinks too sweet or drinks that might discolor your teeth. But after the dental implant surgery, drinking with a straw can be more harmful than beneficial. This is because drinking with a straw creates suction in the mouth, which might dislodge blood clots or cause bleeding.

4. Intense Workout

Most people do not know this, but working out is beneficial to your oral health. Working out helps lower the chances of getting periodontal disease. But you should avoid working out immediately after dental surgery because an intense workout will increase the blood flow, leading to excessive bleeding around the implanted area. That is why you need to reduce physical exercise after getting your dental implants.

These are some things to avoid immediately after a tooth implant surgery. However, it is best to discuss with your dentist how to take care of your teeth after your procedure. The implant dentist will guide you through every step to ensure you heal without complications.

Dealing With Dental Dilemmas: Soft Teeth and Dental Care

Being born with naturally soft teeth, I've spent a lot of time in and out of the dentist's office. Not only have I learned a lot about basic dental care, I've also discovered many tips for dealing with broken teeth, extractions, implants, and more. I decided that I wanted to make the most of my experience by sharing what I've learned with others. True first-hand experience is a great teacher, and I knew that my story could help. I created this site to do just that, and I hope that the information here helps you to understand what to expect from your dental problems.
